Its’ prime location allows avid golfers to find some of the best courses in the country! Home to the Lockwood Folly Country Club (open to the public) this 18-hole, par-72 course is fun for the whole family and has been rated four star by Golf Digest magazine. Putt-putt golfing can be a fun activity for everyone and is also available at the entrance to the island!
Fish It: Whether it’s fishing from the pier, beach or deep-sea fishing you’re interested in, Holden is the place to be. The Holden Beach Marina (910-842-5447) and Stand N’ Down Charters (910-842-7222) both offer full-day, 1/2-day and shorter sport fishing excursions, where you might just get lucky and reel in a mackerel, grouper, mahi-mahi, tuna or even a baby shark! Fishing of any kind can be a great bonding experience with your kids.
Turtle It: That’s right, Holden Beach is known for its reputation as a nesting beach for loggerhead sea turtles. If you visit in July, you might just get the very rare experience of witnessing a “turtle boil” which is when the babies emerge from their nests buried in the sand and make their way to their new life in the ocean. Hatching season runs anywhere from May to October, with hatchings usually taking place in the late evenings. Volunteers from the Holden Beach Turtle Watch Program guard these nests very carefully, but will gladly alert residents and visitors when a hatching is to be expected. Seeing these cute tiny turtles being born would be an unforgettable experience for both you and your children to enjoy.
